Colleagues:
As we reflect on the field for National Public Health Week 2020, it is truly remarkable how far we have come. The start of 2020 did not go as many of us expected, as the coronavirus (COVID-19) had a different idea for how we would spend several weeks—which has now turned into an undetermined amount of time. Many of us had previously planned vacations, weddings, family gatherings, and other events scheduled during this period—and like many of you, I had plans of attending the 2020 Preparedness Summit in Dallas, then making my way to the new Texas Rangers Stadium to be part of opening day. Unfortunately, COVID-19 had different plans and forced many of us to adjust to a new “normal”.
We are witnessing a pandemic of historic proportions. Public health professionals are being stretched on all fronts. We are all in the news and our daily response activities are being closely watched. Public health is no longer the invisible guardian that we so often speak, but a very visible and valuable part of this effort to fight the virus and reduce its spread.
So, as NACCHO President, I want to take a moment to say THANK YOU! Thank you to our members for the countless hours that you are spending away from your family and friends to serve your communities. Thank you for being transformational leaders and the boots on the ground in the midst of a crisis. Thank you for being that steady voice in this time of uncertainty.
Many people and friends, inside and outside my community, have sent me texts and calls of encouragement during this time. Now it is my turn to send you all encouragement. My hope for all of you is continued strength and good health during this time so that you can faithfully execute your duties and be that shining light in your communities.
Keep up your amazing work! Stay strong, as your communities need you. And just know that you have a friend here in Texas that has great admiration for all of you.
